Every May, CHEER observes Older Americans Month by hosting special celebrations in each activity center and a public luncheon at the Warren L. and Charles C. Allen, Jr. CHEER Community Center in Georgetown. The 2019 theme is “Connect, Create, Contribute” which encourages older adults and their communities to:
· Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.
· Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.
· Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.
Communities that encourage the contributions of older adults are stronger! By engaging and supporting all community members, we recognize that older adults play a key role in the vitality of our neighborhoods, networks, and lives.
During a meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens in 1963, President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizens Month, encouraging the nation to pay tribute to older people across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter’s proclamation changed the name to Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate those 65 and older through ceremonies, events and public recognition.
CHEER is hosting the Older Americans Luncheon on Friday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its community center on Sand Hill Road. Entertainment will be provided by popular local DJ, Sky Brady. There will also be 50/50 and basket raffles. Tickets are $6 per person for seniors 60 and over, and $8 for non-seniors. Tickets are available from all Activity Center directors in Georgetown, Greenwood, Long Neck, Milton, Lewes, Ocean View, and Roxana, or contact Robin Greene at 302-515-3063 ([email protected]).
Also during the month of May in observance of Older Americans Month, lunches will only be $1 for all age 60 and over (regularly $4). Contact your local CHEER Activity Center to find out what other special events are planned in May.
