May is Older Americans Month
“Make Your Mark” at CHEER’s Celebration Luncheon
Older adults are a growing and increasingly vital part of our country. The contributions they make to our communities are varied, deeply rooted, and include influential roles in the nation’s economy, politics, and the arts. From 69-year-old NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Jr. to 84-year-old actress Rita Moreno to 83-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who took her seat as a Supreme Court Justice at age 60, older adults are blazing trails in all aspects of American life.
In 1963, we began to acknowledge the contributions of older people by using the month of May to celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM). Led by the Administration for Community Living, the annual observance offers the opportunity to learn about, support, and celebrate our nation’s older citizens. The 2020 theme is - Make Your Mark.
ACL selected this theme to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. Their time, experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day. Communities, organizations, and individuals of all ages are also making their marks. This year’s theme highlights the difference everyone can make – in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities.
While CHEER, a local non-profit senior services agency, provides an array of services from home health care to Meals on Wheels, to older adults year-round, it uses OAM 2020 to focus on how older adults in our community are leading and inspiring others, how we can support and learn from them, and how we might follow their examples to blaze trails of our own.
Throughout the month of May, CHEER will conduct activities and share information designed to highlight its programs. It offers mid-day meals at its seven activity centers throughout the county (Georgetown, Milton, Long Neck, Lewes, Ocean View, Roxana and Bridgeville). A special luncheon to celebrate the month-long observance of Older Americans Month will take place at the CHEER Community Center in Georgetown on Friday, May 29, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Special entertainment is planned. Tickets for the luncheon are $6 for seniors 60 years and over, and $8 for all under 60. Tickets are available at all CHEER Activity Centers or contact Robin Greene at 302-515-3063, or [email protected].
