CHEER, Inc. will hold its 10th Annual March for Meals Campaign on

Thursday, March 21, 2019.

CHEER, Inc. will once again participate in the March for Meals Campaign on Thursday, March 21, 2019.

March for Meal Campaign began about ten years ago when Meals on Wheels of America launched a national campaign for public awareness of the Meals on Wheels program all across America.  The purpose of the campaign is to educate the community about the importance of the meal programs and what is involved in preparing and delivering meals to seniors confined to their homes.  Each member of the national organization began the campaigns in their states and cities.  With CHEER, Inc. being a member of MOWA national organization, the effort here in Sussex County began ten years ago and has continued annually.

The Campaign consists of two parts.  Part one involves sending invitation letters to all elected officials in the State of Delaware inviting them to come out and deliver a meal from their local CHEER activity center on March 21, 2019. They are encouraged to see first-hand the importance of a meal that they delivered. They also have an opportunity to talk with the recipient about how the meal benefits them. The elected official will be invited to return to the center and enjoy lunch; the same meal that they just delivered so they can also experience the quality and presentation of the meals served.

Part two will be fundraising dinners being held in local CHEER Centers throughout Sussex County the night of March 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. The purpose of these dinners is to make the public aware of what the home-delivered meal program is about and to raise funds for the Meals on Wheels program. The cost of the meal is $5 per person. With every meal served that night, half of the proceeds will go to pay for the raw food for a senior meal.

While March 21st has been set aside as the official date of March For Meals, any official not available on that date has an open invitation to come at a time that is convenient for them during the month of March to deliver a meal. U.S. Senator Tom Carper has worked the event into his busy calendar on Wed., March 20. He has participated in this event for many years. Last year, nine of our elected representatives participated in the event and this year we are looking to have more.

This invitation is also open to the public. If you would like to see how the Meals on Wheels program operate, please call Florence Mason at 302-515-3045.

For only $5.00, you will get a full course meal and help provide a senior a meal at the same time! Call 302-515-3045 and reserve your spot.  All the dinners are open to the public.  There will be entertainment and a 50/50 raffle. Come see first-hand how the program works and get a tour of the center.

Today, more than six million seniors experience some form of hunger and nearly three million are at risk of hunger. You can help erase senior hunger by contributing to the Meals on Wheels program. CHEER is also looking for volunteers.  More than 400 CHEER volunteers deliver hot meals to homebound seniors. To contribute or volunteer, call CHEER at 302-515-3040. You can also mail a contribution to CHEER, Inc, 546 South Bedford Street, Georgetown, DE 19947 or by visiting www. CHEER Nutrition:  We are Meals on Wheels so no senior goes hungry.
